Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 ESV
Seven ways to know if you are poor in spirit (Thomas Watson on The Beatitudes)
- He that is poor in spirit is weaned from himself. (But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. Psalm 131: 2 ESV) Your focus is not on yourself.
- He that is poor in spirit is a Christ-admirer. Your focus is on Christ.
- He that is poor in spirit is ever complaining of his spiritual estate. ('One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth." Proverbs 13:7 ESV)
- He that is poor in spirit is lowly in heart. (Job 42:6 'therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.', Philippians 4:13 'I can do all things through him who strengthens me.', Galatians 2: 20 'I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.' 1 Corinthians 15:10 'But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.' ESV)
- He who is poor in spirit is much in prayer.
- The poor in spirit is content to take Christ upon his own terms. (Philippians 3:8 'Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith', ESV)
- He that is poor in spirit is an exalter of free grace. (1 Timothy 1:14 'and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.' ESV)
