Romans 7:15-25

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. Romans 7:15-25 ESV

How Can You Know If You Are Poor In Spirit

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 ESV

Seven ways to know if you are poor in spirit (Thomas Watson on The Beatitudes)

  1. He that is poor in spirit is weaned from himself. (But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. Psalm 131: 2 ESV)  Your focus is not on yourself.
  2. He that is poor in spirit is a Christ-admirer. Your focus is on Christ.
  3. He that is poor in spirit is ever complaining of his spiritual estate. ('One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth." Proverbs 13:7 ESV)
  4. He that is poor in spirit is lowly in heart. (Job 42:6 'therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.', Philippians 4:13 'I can do all things through him who strengthens me.', Galatians 2: 20 'I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.' 1 Corinthians 15:10 'But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.' ESV)
  5. He who is poor in spirit is much in prayer.
  6. The poor in spirit is content to take Christ upon his own terms. (Philippians 3:8 'Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith', ESV)
  7. He that is poor in spirit is an exalter of free grace. (1 Timothy 1:14 'and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.' ESV)

Who Is Feeding You?

"A time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats." Charles Spurgeon

Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Matthew 26:32 ESV

He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. Titus 1:9 ESV

Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. 1 Timothy 4:16 ESV

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, Ephesians 4:11-13 ESV

Psalm 51:10-13

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Psalm 51:10-13
